Habitat for Humanity
|
‘Life Mumbai’, has tied up with the Habitat for Humanity (HFHI) a not-for-profit organization dedicated to eradicating poverty housing to build low cost housing for the underprivileged. HFHI has built more than 240,000 houses in 100 countries globally, and over 1.2 million people are living in Habitat homes they helped build and which they own through low-cost, no-profit mortgages. Habitat India has built and repaired 19000 homes from inception. In the last financial year alone it has built more than 5000 homes.
The Mumbai center of Habitat began addressing the housing needs of tribal families in the Karjat region in January 2007, and to date has built and repaired homes for the tribal population in the area. Habitat’s community development partner is Academy of Development Sciences (ADS), Pune. The project has already impacted 3000 people in 45 tribal villages of Karjat and Murbad Taluka of Raigad and Thane districts.
The project between Habitat for Humanity and ASK Group initially included a pilot project of 100 houses in Karjat (100 km from Mumbai) which was completed by March 2008. The beneficiaries of the Habitat Housing program are tribal families who live in dilapidated huts, and have no financial resources of their own to build or improve their homes. For our group, partnering with Habitat has been a rewarding experience as most of the programmes are designed and implemented by the local people themselves. Based on the positive experience and outcome in the pilot project the scope of the relationship was further expanded to include 1200 houses across the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

BACKGROUND
Habitat for Humanity is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. HFH has built more than 225,000 houses in 100 countries globally, and over 1.1 million people are living in Habitat homes they helped build and which they own through low-cost, no-profit mortgages.
There are Habitat resource centers in Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai and satellite centers in the south and east. New partnerships with corporate supporters and NGO partners extend Habitat's presence to the rest of India.
Habitat house designs and materials vary with climate and locale. Typically, house designs range in size from 240 to 360 sq. ft. and comprise a living room/ bedroom, kitchen and toilet.
HFH India uses a Save & Build housing concept in order to reach more communities in need. Under Save & Build, homeowner families (usually working in groups) save one-third of the cost of the house, with Habitat arranging the balance funds from NGO's, Corporate's in India and from HFH International.
Habitat for Humanity India Trust is a Registered Trust in India. Contributions are exempt under Section 80G of the Indian Income Tax Act. |

Sneha
|
|
A group of doctors working in the Neonatal department of Sion Hospital realized that of the thousands of babies that they treated at the hospital, some died and out of those who recovered and went home, many of them developed handicaps. Rearing and caring of these handicapped children is a hard-hitting task for slum dwellers. Not only is proper healthcare needed at the time of pregnancy, but also a woman's entire life cycle from birth, including social and health situations, will have an impact on the outcome of her newborn's life. In order to tackle this problem this group of committed doctors set up SNEHA (Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action for women and child) in the year of 1999. Since its inception it is committed to provide women with support and knowledge to assist them in making healthy choices for themselves and their children.
Its scope includes facilitation in Health Posts, Maternity Homes (Level I), Peripheral Hospitals with attached maternity wards (Level II) and Teaching Hospitals (Level III)
Life Mumbai’s association with Sneha aims to achieve the following:
- Upgrading the facilities (Staff, equipments, drugs and supplies) in Municipal maternity Homes and Peripheral Hospitals
- Providing Vital (classification – Vital, Essential and Desirable) level facilities to the Municipal Maternity Homes and Peripheral Hospitals to enable them to give designated level of care.
- Improving the standards of Facilities( Staff, equipments, drugs and supplies)
In other words the objective is to fill up the deficiencies which hinder the dispensing of quality care.
The project is initially being piloted in one region catered to by Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Hospital (Eastern and Central suburbs of Mumbai) covering10 Maternity Homes and 4 Peripheral hospitals. If the project succeeds then it can be scaled up to other hospitals under K.E.M. and Nair Hospital (Teaching Hospitals). The association will enable the hospitals to give the designated level of care. The Urban poor, who access the facilities, can now hope to get Quality Care.
Project Activities
- Obtaining the existing specifications of the identified equipments, drugs and supplies to be obtained from MCGM
- Identifying the last supplier of the identified equipments, drugs and supplies and the cost at which supplied
- Arranging approval of the proposed purchase of equipments by end user and medical engineering cell of MCGM
- Any other activity to facilitate the coordinate between the MCGM facilities, their needs and the donor

Sun Beam
|
|
Our group has been associated with Sunbeam, a public charitable trust for some years now. The objective of this trust is to transform the lives of underprivileged Indian children by providing them an opportunity to realize their potential.
The trust has been working towards ensuring the holistic development of underprivileged children by meeting their psychological and educational needs. It has been doing yeoman service in motivating and empowering the community (especially the parents) to make them responsible for the overall development of their children. Sunbeam’s interventions are a program of transformation rather than service delivery with clarity on withdrawal strategy, so that the community can become independent and self - reliant. It has been striving to change the parents’ mindsets to enable them to take responsibility for the overall development of their children.
The trust has been focusing its attention on the children of the community of slum dwellers, construction labourers, mill workers, construction labourers, roadside vendors, security guards etc. The areas in which the trust has been working on with a great degree of success is:
- Education
- Healthcare and Nutrition
- Recreation
- Community Development
- Counseling
- Vocational Training
Over the years through the active support of individual donors, corporate sector and trusts, Sunbeam has been able to bring about a positive change in the lives of over 1000 child beneficiaries. |
