| John Abraham inspires ASK to build homes for Habitat |
Mumbai, October 11, 2007 - Smt. Rajashreeji Birla, Chairperson of Habitat’s IndiaBUILDS Advisory Committee hosted a function facilitating a partnership between the ASK Group and Habitat for Humanity India. The event was marked with the shining star presence of John Abraham who is the brand ambassador for the IndiaBUILDS.
Mr. Asit Koticha Chairman of ASK group – a leading financial services and portfolio management group presented Rs.36.25 lakhs to Mr. Peter Selvarajan, CEO of Habitat for Humanity India. Other eminent presence was of Mr. Sanjay Nayar - CEO of Citigroup and prominent supporters of Habitat India - Mr. Gul Kripalani of Pijikay, Mr. Anil Singhvi of Ican.
While showing his support to the cause, Mr. Asit Koticha Chairman of ASK said, “the ASK-Habitat partnership is inspired by the Join John’s Brigade campaign of Habitat led by my favourite film star Mr. John Abraham”. Mr. Peter Selvarajan, CEO of Habitat for Humanity India, shared the details of the staggering success of Habitat, “Habitat India has built & repaired 19000 homes from inception; and in the last financial year have built more than 5000 homes”, he said.
Being a devout supporter of the cause which Habitat India stands for, Ms Rajashree Birla said enthusiastically, “We have already committed Rs.1 Crore to Habitat India during this financial year which will help build 1400 homes for the poor”.
Talking about his campaign, John Abraham urged people to come forward and present their support towards building home for the destitute. “Come join my brigade to build decent homes for the poor. Come on India, let’s show we care!” – was his call to all those present.
The project between Habitat for Humanity and ASK Group in Karjat will also include a school and a primary health care centre, and is planned to be finished by March 2008.

The Mumbai Center of Habitat, began addressing the housing needs of tribal families in the Karjat region in January 2007, and to date has built and repaired homes for the tribal population in the area. Habitat’s community development partner is Academy of Development Sciences (ADS), Pune. The project has already impacted 3000 people in 45 tribal villages of Karjat and Murbad Taluka of Raigad and Thane districts.
The IndiaBUILDS campaign of Habitat India aims to build 50,000 homes by 2011 with volunteer and financial support from corporate, government and individuals.
The ASK-supported beneficiaries of the Habitat Housing program in Karjat are tribal families who live in dilapidated huts, and have no financial resources of their own to build or improve their homes. |
